To assist social service organizations in building employee capacity, George Junior Republic has partnered with several local colleges and universities to afford undergraduate and graduate students internship opportunities. Academic institutions including Edinboro University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Pennsylvania State University, Slippery Rock University, The University of Pittsburgh, Waynesburg College, Westminster College, and Youngstown State University, have participated in this program. Each semester, approximately 10 to 12 seniors, majoring in psychology, social work, or education volunteer to partake in this experience. Typically placed in Special Needs Units, students work approximately 20 hours a week and earn three credit hours toward the completion of their degree. Under close staff supervision, interns receive extensive experience in the field. Through practical implications, an intern’s knowledge is tested as each student is assigned a youth to counsel, to accompany to court hearings, and to prepare corresponding documentation. The successful completion of an internship at George Junior Republic has proven to increase students’ marketability and has resulted in helping interns to secure permanent positions at social service agencies.
