George Junior Republic
students, grades 9-12, are eligible for admission to the Career and Technical
Center. Students must be at least 14 years of age, and are admitted regardless
of grades and/or test scores. Students are assigned to vocational shops
according to their skill competencies to be learned, and their expressed
choice on a priority basis. This competency based program which allows
new students to enroll weekly, is built around the requirements of their
Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Due
to the transient student population these programs were designed to
allow students to work at different paces within each instructional area.
Students
in GJR's vocational programs must receive large amounts of individual
attention to meet their needs.
Career and Technical Center programs are adapted to meet
the specific needs of students, by teaching single skills. Based on the
school’s historic post placement statistical data, it is estimated
that fifteen percent (15%) of the students, who enroll at George Junior
Republic’s Career and Technical Center, continue their education
at a Career and Technical School in their home district. Of these students,
it is estimated that twenty-five percent (25%) have full-time employment
utilizing single skills learned. Additionally, an estimated fifty percent
(50%) continue to pursue some type of post secondary vocational training
and/or work experience program. Vocational guidance services and job placement
services are provided by the Barnes School guidance department and by
George Junior Republic staff members.
The programs of the vocational school are state approved.
Students who complete 75 or more hours in a vocational program will receive
a certificate of completion.
